Despite the recent flop of Concord, Bungie is moving forward with development of ‘Marathon’ which they say is “too far along” to change, and the game is reportedly set to hit the market with a $40 price tag, according to Forbes’ Paul Tassi.
The report, which cites a “source with knowledge of Marathon”, claims that Bungie’s uncertainty around monetization came to a head after free-to-play live-service shooter The Finals was demeed to have underperformed.
However, the success of the live-service-shooter ‘Helldivers 2’, which also had a $40 price tag, has convinced Bungie and Sony that this was the appropriate strategy when it comes to the launch of Marathon.
The comes despite the failure of Concord, which had a $40 price tag but was pilled from sale following only two weeks after a disastrous reception, but that isn’t deterring plans for Marathon which is set to come complete with a “standard cosmetic shop/battle pass stuff.”
The report adds that Marathon will be arriving, “barring anything seismic” because development is “simply too far along to pivot back to free-to-play”. The report also said that Marathon will adopt a similar class/hero system akin to Apex Legends, but will have a much greater focus on customization, such as unique abilities.
