What are your thoughts about banned chatters still being able to watch the streams they are banned from on Twitch?

Even if a viewer is banned, they can still watch your stream. They cannot chat any longer, but they have access to everything else. In my opinion, this should be changed. I think Twitch should allow for either levels of banning someone or full on ban the person from watching, as well as chatting.

I believe this would help some harrassment issues because it takes away the ability for those banned to continue to watch and have “ammunition” of any kind for further harrassment. I also think this would help streamers who have to deal with stream snipers because they would no longer have access to the stream.

This idea isn’t a perfect solution. A person could still access and watch the stream if they are not logged into an account or if they create a new account, but it might deter some of the behavior.

Perhaps they could allow for the option to disable non-logged in viewers from having the ability to view a stream?

What are your thoughts? Do you have any ideas for solutions that might work better than what Twitch has currently?

It’s always been controversial. I think it’s based on how much $ a creator makes. I also believe that they’re so structurally unorganized on the gaming streams side that it may not be worth it for them to correct.
Twitch seems to be heading away from that and more towards big brands and original content deals. The legalities and conduct issues are too risky

And the toxicity and harassment pathways are lazily mitigated. Tags just make targeting easier. It’s like they have no pulse on the culture of their community or intuitive interest on implementing real changes to combat it

I can see where you’re coming from on both points. It seems like simply not allowing the banned person to view a stream wouldn’t be that difficult, but there are nuances, like you said, that complicate things for them to implement something like that.

The bottom line as a streamer is that you have to manage your audience in terms of what is or is not accepted and be consistent with it by also setting the example in your own behavior and having respect for others. It’s crucial to be strong in who you are as a person to help in not letting any negativity greatly affect you too.

I agree 100%. In fact, the thing is when I hear friends complaining (whining) about jerks in chat. It’s really quite simple. Bam them. Story over. If they make new acts just do it again. I have to say that having streamed for a decade (back when I was a punk on justintv) I’ve only had a handful of problems.
Making a fuss and taking it to social media just makes it worse. Maintaining a positive vibe & not letting it affect you instead of catering to trolls generally makes them not interested in staying around.

I definitely agree with you, and that’s been my experience. They want a reaction more than anything. I feel good about the core of who I am, so I focus on not bringing attention to it nor taking it personal and moving forward. And, when it’s warranted, I’m open to constructive discussion with someone who comes across as rude or mean at first because typically, they’re the ones that really are hurting on the inside and are trying to feel better in all the wrong ways. Thank you foe your response and input on the topic!

Oh, one more thing, I love that you streamed when it was still JustinTV! 😃

I have always HATED how your can ban someone and they can stick around. They can even make clips! I’ve been in a situation where I had to ban someone who was threatening me irl… I still find them watching me sometimes and honestly it freaks me out. I agree different levels of banning are not only wanted but NEEDED! It makes sense to quick ban just a random troll or follow bot, but an actual threat if someone coming after you in games… That needs a different items level where you cannot even watch the streamer or read chat. Period.

I agree and those were my thoughts on it too. It just seems all around safer to not even let them watch. The disgruntled banned person would be the one to look for any snippets of private info or to make weird clips and things too. I feel like if the ability for them to watch is taken away, maybe they’ll just move on, but because it’s not and option, they can still stay too involved. Thank you for responding and giving your input on the topic! I hope they’ll make changes to their banning options in the future.

I definitely agree. It’s always been weird to me that they are only banned from chatting. It leaves too much open for them to be malicious or something. I hope they’ll add the ability to have ban levels at some point, but I won’t hold my breath waiting lol. Thank you for your response and input!
