Spanish Esports organization Vodafone Giants have come under fire for a post on their official Twitter page that appears to be a blatant racial joke, which has since been removed.
While the Tweet had been deleted, Dexerto has posted a screenshot of the tweet in question, which you can find here.
According to their report, the tweet that is causing all the chatter said: “Qué es una luciérnaga negra?” (‘What is a black firefly?’).
A few hours later, Vodafone Giants seems to have followed up that initial tweet with an answer of their own; “Una luciernigga” – substituting ‘naga’ for the racial slur.
The brand took it even further by including a seemingly random GIF of a black man roller blading in his underwear. The joke didn’t go unnoticed, with some fans even calling them out for it, but Vodafone Giants didn’t seem worried about it, and intent on letting the “joke” stand, replying to a fan by saying; “I thought about it, but the joke was worth the risk. I’m sure @shanksfgc‘s not offended (Kappa).”
While the jokes were visible for hours, they were eventually removed, only to be replaced by another joke, and an apology was issued on Monday.
“We changed the joke this Monday and apologize to all the people who may have been offended by the [joke] published this morning. Sorry for any offense caused.”
