Twitch is owning up for being tricked into thinking that someone posing as an official representative at CBS was legit.
The fake CBS representative informed Twitch of copyright infringement for Twitch streamers streaming the Democractic Debate, which motivated Twitch to start issuing bans, and those bans included popular streamers such as Trihex and even the podcast Chapo Trap House, according to VICE.
Twitch issued the bans because it believed it was complying with a DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act) notice that came from the imposter rep from CBS, which was the news organization hosting the debate. They claimed to be representing CBS as Praxis Political Legal.
Following an investigation, Twitch realized the hoax, and reversed the bans. Twitch also issued the following statement to VICE Games:
“Twitch’s investigation has determined that the alleged copyright infringement notices directed to channels from Praxis Political are false. Twitch is reinstating access to each account and removing any strike attributed to a channel in connection with the notice, effective immediately. We regret that a false notice from a 3rd party disrupted any of our streamers and appreciate all who alerted us to the concerns about Praxis Political. The safety of our community is a top priority and it is unacceptable to target folks with false claims. The investigation continues as to the actor that submitted the notices.”
