The University of South Florida has officially launched it’s esports program across their three campuses, formalized under the Recreation and Wellness department and USF, and now considered as an official recreational program at the university.
The new esports program will be eligible for resources and funding opportunities through the Student Government.
“Esports is an opportunity for us to bridge and build a community of not only competitive gamers and casual gamers, but people who are just generally interested in video games” Bart Stucker, Coordinator of Recreation and Wellness Programs at USF’s Sarasota-Manatee campus said in an official statement.
The university will launch a new webpage for it’s esports program later this month and will include “year-round intramural schedules, student leadership opportunities, information regarding USF’s competitive teams, and details on how to get involved.”
“The students really miss being on campus and having that sense of community,” said Kristofer Newsome, sports club coordinator on USF’s Tampa campus. “Esports provides the opportunity for us to still come together and continue doing what we love.”
The program currently hosts competitions for a variety of game titles across several platforms including PlayStation, Xbox and PC, and broadcasts many of the team’s competitions live on its Twitch channel,
